Configuration

Configuration is the process of setting up software to match an organization's requirements, including fields, workflows, permissions, notifications, and settings, without changing the underlying code. Configuration is central to buying decisions because it determines how much customization work remains after licensing: products with flexible configuration reduce the need for development and consulting. Good configuration experiences are guided, reversible, and testable, letting administrators change settings without breaking other parts of the system. Organizations should treat configuration as a governed activity, documenting choices so that upgrades, audits, and staff changes do not silently alter behavior. Buyers should explore configuration depth during trials, because products that appear similar in demonstrations can differ sharply in how much setup every feature requires. Over-configuration is also a risk: systems made rigidly specific to one process become more expensive to maintain and harder to evolve.
