Pilot

A pilot is a small-scale deployment of a software solution with real users and real data, run to evaluate performance and fit before committing to full rollout. Pilots convert claims into evidence: integration behavior, performance at realistic load, user reactions, and hidden configuration demands surface during a pilot, not in a demonstration. Buyers should define the pilot's success criteria in advance, including which workflows will be tested, what data will be loaded, and what metrics will decide whether the rollout proceeds. A pilot is more rigorous than a trial: it is scoped, time-bound, and reviewed by decision-makers with pass-or-fail findings. Successful pilots build internal advocacy, since participating users become champions during rollout. Pilot failure also has value, preventing a costly full deployment of a mismatched product. Organizations should budget pilot time and realistic data preparation, because half-built pilots produce misleading results.
