Innovation in software refers to the introduction of new ideas, methods, or features that meaningfully improve how products serve users, whether through automation, AI assistance, better collaboration, or entirely new categories of capability. For buyers, vendor innovation matters in two ways: it protects the product against becoming obsolete, and it shapes whether the investment compounds over time. Evaluation should separate genuine innovation from incremental feature additions, and check roadmap credibility through release history, developer activity, and customer feedback. Innovation also carries adoption cost: new features require training and process change, so teams should weigh the value of novel capabilities against the disruption of adopting them. Healthy software programs welcome innovation but apply it selectively, piloting promising capabilities before rolling them out broadly.
